Today’s Gospel passage from Luke is short: “While Jesus was speaking, a woman from the crowd called out and said to him, “Blessed is the womb that carried you and the breasts at which you nursed.” He replied, “Rather, blessed are those who hear the word of God and observe it.”
What does Jesus’ puzzling response mean? Are we not to honor the one whose “soul magnifies the Lord” and through whom the incarnation was made possible? Of course we are, but Jesus is making a different point. He wants us to understand that life in Him is not merely reverence for holy people or miraculous events. Rather, holiness comes when we become doers of the word of God. It is our active participation in God’s works – forgiveness, mercy and charity – that is blessed. After all, we are called to transform the world with our love!
