In today’s reading from the Book of Wisdom, the writer describes how early humans were ignorant of the true identity of God and instead looked to nature:
“Either fire, or wind, or the swift air,
or the circuit of the stars, or the mighty water,
or the luminaries of heaven, the governors of the world, they considered gods.”
We no longer believe that the forces of nature are gods who control our existence, but we sometimes spend more time and energy worshiping earthly things than we do God. Things that come quickly to mind are money, possessions, power and acclaim.
How such things pale in comparison to the wondrous reality of our God! We are called to share that reality openly and generously so that all can know, as the passage from Wisdom reminds us, “how far more excellent is the Lord than these!”
