False Prophets

John warns us of the danger of being seduced by false prophets in today’s first reading.  It is a timely admonition in these times.  We are continually being bombarded by testimonies touting the latest spiritual guru or methodology that supposedly will help us to reach a heretofore undiscovered way to experience God.  Many times we are told that no “church” is necessary to reach this ultimate spiritual fulfillment.

Be careful.  There is only one reliable way to find the way to the Father, and that way is through the Lord Jesus Christ.  As John tells us:

Beloved, do not trust every spirit
but test the spirits to see whether they belong to God,
because many false prophets have gone out into the world.
This is how you can know the Spirit of God:
every spirit that acknowledges Jesus Christ come in the flesh
belongs to God,
and every spirit that does not acknowledge Jesus
does not belong to God.
