Be Made Clean

Jesus cleanses a leper in today’s gospel.  One of the reasons that the healing took place is because the leper had the courage and faith to ask Jesus to do it.

To Jews in the first century, leprosy was a disease that caused fear and loathing.  Lepers were considered to be sinners punished by God with their disease.  They were to be avoided at all costs.  The fact that this man had the temerity to approach Jesus must have been shocking to the disciples.  Did that stop Jesus from showing mercy?  Absolutely not.

Why is this story so important for us?  Because all of us have sin that shames us, our own spiritual leprosy.  Do we have the courage and faith to ask Jesus to make us clean?

Lord, if you wish, you can make me clean.
