In today’s gospel, Jesus heals a man possessed by an unclean spirit.  As he prepares to perform this miracle, the demon inside of the man challenges Jesus:

What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth?
Have you come to destroy us?
I know who you are–the Holy One of God!

Jesus then rebuked him, and the man was cleansed.

Did you notice that the demon inside the man recognized Jesus?  It recognized not only who Jesus was, but understood his mission as well.  After all, the demon asked Jesus whether he had come to destroy evil.  If there is one thing that we should understand, it is that Satan is under no illusion about the authority of the Christ.  Every word spoken by the man possessed reveals his recognition of Jesus.  The mission of Jesus is to remove the earthly authority of the Evil One and replace it with the kingdom of God.

Satan knows the will of God and hates us.  Jesus knows the will of God and loves us.  Why is it that so often the love of God in our lives isn’t recognized?

One Response to Recognized

  1. Will says:

Even Satan and the demons recognize Jesus’ authority. The question for us is do we follow Jesus’ commands? Do we follow Mary’s instruction – do whatever he tells you?
