John the Baptist calls Jesus the “Lamb of God.” By doing so, John shows us that he has received a revelation from God that Jesus will become the new, perfect sacrifice that atones for the sins of the world. As a result, we know that John understood not only that Jesus was the Christ, but that Jesus would have to suffer and die in order to defeat the power of death.
We think of John as someone who didn’t live long enough to see the mission of Jesus unfold. In calling Jesus the Lamb of God, John reminds us that he saw and understood the mission at the moment when he baptized Jesus in the Jordan river.
Pretty cool, huh?
