The Measure With Which You Measure

All of us sometimes wonder about how we will fare when we ultimately are brought before the Lord in the final judgement.  Will God be merciful and understanding of our human weaknesses, or will his assessment of our actions be harsh?

Jesus gives us a glimpse into how we will be judged in today’s gospel passage.  He instructs us:

Take care what you hear.
The measure with which you measure will be measured out to you,
and still more will be given to you.
To the one who has, more will be given;
from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away.

The message is clear.  If we are merciful to others, God will be merciful to us.  If we forgive others their sins against us, so too will God forgive our sins.  The measure with which we measure will be measured out to us.
