Clean Heart

Are we the author of our own holiness?

A clean heart create for me, O God,
and a steadfast spirit renew within me.
Cast me not out from your presence,
and your Holy Spirit take not from me.

These words, taken from today’s psalm, remind us that we are not alone in our quest to be steadfast in our faith.  Instead, we can call on God to help us to accomplish this task.  As the psalmist does, we can invite God to transform us.

The question that arises is whether we recognize that the work we seek to accomplish is a joint effort between us and God.  Do we think that we can have a clean heart through our efforts alone?  When we succeed in faith, do we give thanks to God for his participation or do we credit ourselves?  Do we take the presence of God and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit for granted?
