Inside Out

When in today’s gospel Jesus talks about defilement, he focuses not on the exterior influences of our lives but rather on the defilement that comes from within us.  In other words, Jesus tells us that we should not be so concerned about those things and events that are outside of us, but to be concerned about the things that are within.  If in assessing our weaknesses we blame outside factors we will never experience fundamental change.  After all, things outside of us are necessarily just that, outside and not within our control.  If we want true change and true peace, we should look inside where we can directly encounter God.  Only then can we experience change that lasts and gives us purpose.

Today, let us focus on God from the inside out into the world in which we live.
