Today’s psalm offers simple advice for all of us. When God speaks, we should listen. Unfortunately, sometimes we decide that what we want to do is more important than what in our heart we know God wants us to do. At least we can be somewhat heartened by the fact that our resistance is not unique. As the psalm reminds us, the people of Israel sometimes refused to follow the command of the Lord.
Oh, that today you would hear his voice:
“Harden not your hearts as at Meribah,
as in the day of Massah in the desert,
Where your fathers tempted me;
they tested me though they had seen my works.”
We, too, have seen the works of God. If today you hear God’s voice, harden not your heart!
