Today is Palm Sunday, commemorating Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem. There is, though, more to this day than receiving blessed palms and having holy water sprinkled on you (don’t forget to make the sign of the cross — even if you don’t actually get wet!). You see, on Palm Sunday we also hear for the first time this Lent the gospel reading of the Lord’s passion and crucifixion. Doesn’t it strike you as odd that we read these two very different gospels on the same Sunday?
It shouldn’t. The mission of Jesus always led him to the cross. The joyous journey into Jerusalem, while uplifting, could never have been the summit of the Lord’s life. His Father sent him into the world as the sinless lamb who takes upon himself the punishment for the sins of all men and women. In doing so he frees us from death and leads us to everlasting life.
Praise and glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ!
