The Light

If there is one obligation that we as followers of Jesus must take on ourselves, it is that we must identify the darkness in this world as darkness.  Specifically, we need to ensure that we do not fall into the trap of judging what is good by listening to the voices that dominate our modern culture.  In recent times, we have been bombarded with television shows, movies and internet content that run counter to our Christian values.  Evil is consistently being portrayed as good.  We have to be ready to stand up against these influences and be courageous enough to risk the disapproval of others.

This is what it means to be a child of the light: That we set aside our desire to be popular or loved or admired or trendy, and instead desire only to serve Jesus Christ.  This has been the call from the time of Jesus’ resurrection to today.  In today’s gospel, John reminds us that there will always be a choice between following light or following darkness.

And this is the verdict,
that the light came into the world,
but people preferred darkness to light,
because their works were evil.
For everyone who does wicked things hates the light
and does not come toward the light,
so that his works might not be exposed.
But whoever lives the truth comes to the light,
so that his works may be clearly seen as done in God.

Be brave, the desire of God is that we all live within the light!
