Be Salt

What would our life be without salt?  Salt is a wonderful complementary substance that makes virtually everything we eat better. Actually, it’s a trick question, since without salt we would not exist.  Salt is one of the essential components of our bodies.  A better question is, “What good would salt be if the only salt we could get was flat and without taste?”

In today’s gospel Jesus uses salt to teach us a lesson about our faith lives. He challenges us to recognize that we are to be salt, to flavor the faith of others.

You are the salt of the earth.
But if salt loses its taste, with what can it be seasoned?
It is no longer good for anything
but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.

Does our life invigorate and make the lives of others more flavorful?  Or do we find reasons to judge, condemn and feel superior?  If we do the latter, our faith is flat and without taste, not worthy of the one we claim to serve.

Be joyful, love openly and often, and God will make you salt that flavors the lives of those around you.
