Jesus Said It

Think you know Jesus?  Want to know just how completely we have to change ourselves to do his will?  Pay attention to the words of Jesus in today’s passage from Matthew’s gospel.

Jesus said to his disciples:
“You have heard that it was said, You shall not commit adultery.
But I say to you,
everyone who looks at a woman with lust
has already committed adultery with her in his heart.
If your right eye causes you to sin,
tear it out and throw it away.
It is better for you to lose one of your members
than to have your whole body thrown into Gehenna.
And if your right hand causes you to sin,
cut it off and throw it away.
It is better for you to lose one of your members
than to have your whole body go into Gehenna.

For us as people living in today’s culture these are hard sayings, but we have to resist the temptation to water down the words of Jesus.  His words reveal the true nature of what it means to sin.  Sin is not limited to our outward actions but instead includes wrongs known only to us in our hearts.  Jesus calls us to be honest with ourselves about the sins of our hearts.

Jesus said it.  Can we do it?   Don’t we have to?
