We live in the wealthiest country on earth, and all of us are rich by the standards of most of the world.  As a result, we have to constantly be on guard not to become too attached to our wealth and possessions.  In today’s gospel passage from Matthew, Jesus warns us of the real danger that  our wealth and possessions will prevent us from seeking the Kingdom of God.

Jesus said to his disciples:
Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth,
where moth and decay destroy, and thieves break in and steal.
But store up treasures in heaven,
where neither moth nor decay destroys, nor thieves break in and steal.
For where your treasure is, there also will your heart be.

Lord Jesus, remind me every day to store up the treasures of heaven rather than the perishable possessions of this life!
