Our Intimate God

How much does God love us?  In our first reading today from the Book of the Prophet Hosea, the Lord reveals the depth of his love for his people.

I will espouse you to me forever:
I will espouse you in right and in justice,
in love and in mercy;
I will espouse you in fidelity,
and you shall know the LORD.

What a declaration of love!  God promises that he will never turn away from us.  He likens his relationship with us to the intimacy of marriage and promises us that he will remain faithful to us forever.  Even though he knows that we will not always remain faithful ourselves, his love will endure until we come back.

Although the people of Israel understood God’s love as referring to the whole nation, we now recognize, because of the personal love offered to us through Christ Jesus, that God’s spousal love is intended for each one of us as individuals.  He invites us to be joined with him in a relationship of the most intimate love.

Are you ready?
