Faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. It is such a gift, and yet it is also a challenge and a responsibility, is it not? Of course, there are many among us who feel that the challenges and responsibilities of the faith belong to the priests, or deacons, or other leaders. Some of you might think that your role in the church is simply to believe in the gospel, or as the old saying goes, to “pray, pay and obey.”
If you are one of those who thinks that others are responsible for spreading the gospel, or that you don’t have the ability to do so, the Apostle Paul has news for you.
Consider your own calling, brothers and sisters.
Not many of you were wise by human standards,
not many were powerful,
not many were of noble birth.
Rather, God chose the foolish of the world to shame the wise,
and God chose the weak of the world to shame the strong,
and God chose the lowly and despised of the world,
those who count for nothing,
to reduce to nothing those who are something,
so that no human being might boast before God.
It is due to him that you are in Christ Jesus,
who became for us wisdom from God,
as well as righteousness, sanctification, and redemption,
so that, as it is written,
Whoever boasts, should boast in the Lord.
So you see, sisters and brothers, all of us are called by God to proclaim the good news of Jesus Christ. Don’t be afraid to be bold in faith. Don’t be afraid to love each other. Don’t be afraid to forgive each other. Don’t be afraid to be merciful to each other. Don’t be afraid to be humble before God and each other.
This is your calling.
