Reveal the Light

Is our faith something that we can keep for ourselves?  Do we have to share our faith with others?  Today’s gospel passage from Luke reveals that we cannot hide our faith without violating the express command of Jesus.

Jesus said to the crowd:
“No one who lights a lamp conceals it with a vessel
or sets it under a bed;
rather, he places it on a lampstand
so that those who enter may see the light.
For there is nothing hidden that will not become visible,
and nothing secret that will not be known and come to light.

We are the light that is meant to be shared with those around us.  It cannot be hidden if we are disciples of Jesus, who wants all to share in his love.  This message is not an easy one. It takes courage to step out in faith, particularly in situations where we are uncomfortable about the reaction we might encounter when we boldly proclaim Christ.

Take heart, my sisters and brothers, for the Lord is with you when you witness his love in the world.  Don’t be afraid to reveal the light.

    Father, help us today to maintain our promise of faithfulness to you even in times
    when we’re not surrounded by people who agree with us.
