Who Has Withstood Him?

job-visited

God is something and someone wholly other than us.  This is a truth that can only be glimpsed, not fully understood.  We stand in his shadow, the shade of his love for us. We are made worthy of him only by his own merciful love.  Can we even imagine what it will be like to see him as he truly is?  In today’s reading from the Book of Job, we hear Job speak of God’s incomprehensible presence.

I know well that it is so;
but how can a man be justified before God?
Should one wish to contend with him,
he could not answer him once in a thousand times.
God is wise in heart and mighty in strength;
who has withstood him and remained unscathed?

You, my God, are worthy of all praise.  Let me be humble enough to recognize that without you I am nothing, and all that I am results from your love and mercy.  Be merciful to me, a sinner, through the saving work of your son, so that I may see you face to face.
