Generations

Abraham Sacrifice_of_Isaac_Giambattista_Pittoni_1720

Today’s first reading sets out the geneology of Jesus.  Probably you have wondered what the significance of this recitation of the lineage of the Messiah.  After doing so, Matthew gives us a summary that informs us of the meaning of the geneology.

Thus the total number of generations
from Abraham to David
is fourteen generations;
from David to the Babylonian exile, fourteen generations;
from the Babylonian exile to the Christ,
fourteen generations.

The scripture brings together the journey of God’s people Israel from the beginning of the covenant to the ultimate fulfillment of that covenant in Christ Jesus.  By noting the symmetry between the generations from Abraham to David and from David to Jesus reveals that all of salvation history is important.

The message for us today is that we live in this continuum of time in which the promises of God given to Abraham and David are made perfect through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ.  The world that we live in still needs us to spread the good news.  We have a role to play in salvation history.  Proclaim his Holy Name!

Maranatha.  Come, Lord Jesus.
