The Refiner’s Fire

In today’s first reading, the Prophet Malachi warns that when the Lord comes there will be a cleansing and refinement of the people of God.  Are we ready to be cleansed and refined by our Master?

Thus says the Lord GOD:
Lo, I am sending my messenger
to prepare the way before me;
And suddenly there will come to the temple
the LORD whom you seek,
And the messenger of the covenant whom you desire.
Yes, he is coming, says the LORD of hosts.
But who will endure the day of his coming?
And who can stand when he appears?
For he is like the refiner’s fire,
or like the fuller’s lye.
He will sit refining and purifying silver,
and he will purify the sons of Levi,
Refining them like gold or like silver
that they may offer due sacrifice to the LORD.
Then the sacrifice of Judah and Jerusalem
will please the LORD,
as in the days of old, as in years gone by.

He is at the threshold of the house.  His kingdom is coming.  Can we humble ourselves to allow the refiner’s fire to burn away the dross in our lives?  If we do not, salvation cannot be ours. In we do, he will make us shine with the light of angels.

Maranatha.  Come, Lord Jesus.

When the siversmith refines the silver to get all the impurities out he carefully watches the fire and keeps refining into he can see his face in the silver. Our loving Father carefully watches our “fires” until He can see His face in us.
