Public Disciples

It’s important to understand that we have a responsibility as followers of Jesus to be public disciples.  To contend that we are Christians without standing among others and proclaiming our faith is hypocrisy.  Jesus offers us life, our payment for that gift is open, visible faith that inspires others to follow him.  In our first reading today John expresses this responsibility we all have to proclaim our faith in Christ Jesus.

Who is the liar?
Whoever denies that Jesus is the Christ.
Whoever denies the Father and the Son, this is the antichrist.
Anyone who denies the Son does not have the Father,
but whoever confesses the Son has the Father as well.

Being a public disciple can be difficult given how hostile our culture is toward Christians. Nevertheless, if we do not stand with Christ we are, as John says, liars. One way to do this is to associate ourselves with other believers, so that we will always be in the company of those who can strengthen us in faith.

Have courage.  In the end, Christ is victorious!
