Timothy is a man that we know only through the writings of his friend and companion Saint Paul. Paul rarely provides us with any biographical information, but today’s reading gives us insight into the faith journey of Timothy. It appears that Timothy’s mother and grandmother were both converts to Christianity. For whatever reason it appears that Timothy did not immediately convert with his family. However, at some later time, Paul himself witnessed the tearful conversion of Timothy to faith in Jesus. After that conversion, Timothy was frequently at Paul’s side.
I am grateful to God,
whom I worship with a clear conscience as my ancestors did,
as I remember you constantly in my prayers, night and day.
I yearn to see you again, recalling your tears,
so that I may be filled with joy,
as I recall your sincere faith
that first lived in your grandmother Lois
and in your mother Eunice
and that I am confident lives also in you.
Tradition has it that Timothy later became the first Bishop of Ephesus and was stoned to death for his opposition to a pagan festival.
Saint Timothy, pray for us.
