Sometimes I hesitate to ask God for something that I want. It seems selfish to ask for anything when I’ve already received so much. Do you also feel that way? In today’s gospel passage from Matthew Jesus expressly tells us that we should ask God for the things that we need and want.
Jesus said to his disciples:
“Ask and it will be given to you;
seek and you will find;
knock and the door will be opened to you.
For everyone who asks, receives; and the one who seeks, finds;
and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.
Which one of you would hand his son a stone
when he asked for a loaf of bread,
or a snake when he asked for a fish?
If you then, who are wicked,
know how to give good gifts to your children,
how much more will your heavenly Father give good things
to those who ask him.
Perhaps we’ve been missing the point. God is our Father, and what loving father doesn’t want to give his children good things? Our Heavenly Father must long for us to ask him to provide for us. In doing so, we accept his love and care. This is sometimes hard to do. We feel that we are not worthy of God’s gifts.
But remember, my sisters and brothers, He makes us worthy.
Think about it.
