How often do we give to the poor? Or even think about them? Are we generous with the gifts that God has given us, or are we miserly? Today’s psalm passage reminds us that the Lord blesses those who honor him by freely sharing what they have been given.
Blessed the man who fears the LORD,
who greatly delights in his commands.
His posterity shall be mighty upon the earth;
the upright generation shall be blessed.
An evil report he shall not fear;
his heart is firm, trusting in the LORD.
His heart is steadfast; he shall not fear
till he looks down upon his foes.
Lavishly he gives to the poor;
his generosity shall endure forever;
his horn shall be exalted in glory.
It is easy to get wrapped up in our own small problems and fail to recognize that many of our brothers and sisters are in real need. Our first challenge is to see the suffering around us. Then we must decide. Will we be people of charity?
