The Baptist

Today we celebrate the Solemnity of  the Nativity of John the Baptist.  What does it take to be a disciple of Jesus?  John knew.

In those days, Paul said:
“God raised up David as king;
of him God testified,
I have found David, son of Jesse, a man after my own heart;
he will carry out my every wish.

From this man’s descendants God, according to his promise,
has brought to Israel a savior, Jesus.
John heralded his coming by proclaiming a baptism of repentance
to all the people of Israel;
and as John was completing his course, he would say,
‘What do you suppose that I am? I am not he.
Behold, one is coming after me;
I am not worthy to unfasten the sandals of his feet.’

All who want to follow Jesus must heed the words of John.  It is a baptism of repentance that leads us discipleship.  That means that we are called to a fundamental change of our lives.  Our attitude toward each other must be focused on love and mercy. Doing so will lead us to a deeper experience of God’s love.

Saint John the Baptist, pray for us.

One Response to The Baptist

  1. Lee Surkin says:

    The mission of St. John the Baptist is to call us to repent of our sins so that we will be ready to welcome Christ. To give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.
