Take Up Your Cross

What does it mean to take up your cross?  Does Jesus mean that we should be looking to endure hardship?  Well, in a way the answer is yes, we should.

Jesus said to his disciples,
“Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself,
take up his cross, and follow me.
For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it,
but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.
What profit would there be for one to gain the whole world
and forfeit his life?
Or what can one give in exchange for his life?
For the Son of Man will come with his angels in his Father’s glory,
and then he will repay each according to his conduct.
Amen, I say to you, there are some standing here
who will not taste death
until they see the Son of Man coming in his Kingdom.”

The comfort of our lives sometimes distracts us from our mission as disciples of Jesus. We need to focus on how we can share the gospel  though the witness of our lives.

Can we deny ourselves and take up the cross?

  1. Lee Surkin says:

God refuses to play games of power and prestige on human terms. Our tendency in the midst of suffering is to turn on God. To get angry and bitter and shake our fist at the sky and say, “God, you don’t know what it’s like! You don’t understand! You have no idea what I’m going through. You don’t have a clue how much this hurts.”
The cross is God’s way of taking away all of our accusations, excuses, and arguments.
The cross is God taking on flesh and blood and saying, “ME TOO!”

  2. Mary Thomas says:

This is difficult for us as humans. This is why God gave his son to become human and suffer for us. How fortunate are we that They thought us worthy of the cross that he literally bore for our salvation. Thank you. AMEN

  3. Nancy Novicki says:

It’s easy to be a disciple of Jesus when life is a bowl of cherries but what
happens when those cherries rot? Do we still have the same frame of mind?
If we do, the reward will be worth the price!
