War in Heaven

There are plenty of people who don’t believe in Satan.  They don’t believe in Hell either. Many of them think that the devil and Hell are just made up in order to frighten people from doing the selfish and greedy things they want to do.  Ironically, these are also the same folks who want to believe that just about everyone goes to Heaven.  After all, if God loves us he wouldn’t allow the devil and Hell to actually exist, right?

War broke out in heaven;
Michael and his angels battled against the dragon.
The dragon and its angels fought back,
but they did not prevail
and there was no longer any place for them in heaven.
The huge dragon, the ancient serpent,
who is called the Devil and Satan,
who deceived the whole world,
was thrown down to earth,
and its angels were thrown down with it.

Then I heard a loud voice in heaven say:
“Now have salvation and power come,
and the Kingdom of our God
and the authority of his Anointed.
For the accuser of our brothers is cast out,
who accuses them before our God day and night.
They conquered him by the Blood of the Lamb
and by the word of their testimony;
love for life did not deter them from death.
Therefore, rejoice, you heavens,
and you who dwell in them.”

Satan is the great deceiver.  His greatest success occurs when he convinces us that he doesn’t exist.  Don’t be fooled.  Not only is he real, his sole purpose is to keep us away from God.  Help one another in resisting him.  None of us can do it alone.  Fortunately, we have each other and we have the Lord, the saints and the angels to help us.

Today is the Feast of the Archangels Michael, Gabriel and Raphael.  We need their intercession now more than ever.

Michael, Gabriel and Raphael, pray for us.  Protect us against the wickedness and snares of the devil.
