The statement that Jesus makes in the gospel passage today is not intended in any way to be disrespectful to his mother. Instead, the Lord is emphasizing the importance of making the scriptures the bedrock of our faith.
While Jesus was speaking,
a woman from the crowd called out and said to him,
“Blessed is the womb that carried you
and the breasts at which you nursed.”
He replied, “Rather, blessed are those
who hear the word of God and observe it.”
There are two essential requirements for becoming mature and well-formed disciples. The first is to immerse ourselves in the word, particularly the gospels. The second is equally important. We must be doers of the word. It is in action that the love of Jesus is made real to those around us.
