Today we celebrate the Memorial of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The Presentation is “that dedication of herself which Mary made to God from her very childhood under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit who filled her with grace at her Immaculate Conception.” Tradition tells us that Mary was dedicated to God at the age of three, and that she led a holy, sacrificial life even as a child. The Presentation is also known as the Dedication of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the feast originated in the East, where it is called the Entry of the Most Holy Theotokos Into the Temple.
Why is the Presentation important? Because it teaches us that even small children can commit their lives to the Lord. This is why parents and grandparents are obliged to share their love of the Lord with their children and grandchildren. It is also why we must live holy lives as an example for children. What they learn from us will influence them for the rest of their lives.
Holy Mary, pray for us.
