Fig Tree

Do you look for signs in your spiritual life?  Many of us are oblivious to the signs that God places in front of us, thereby missing a deeper understanding of his will and our journey. In today’s gospel passage, Jesus reminds his disciples that if they are observant they will appreciate the meaning and timing of the coming of the Kingdom of God.  He uses a fig tree, which blooms as summer approaches, as an example to help them to understand that there are signs that will herald the new Kingdom.

Jesus told his disciples a parable.
“Consider the fig tree and all the other trees.
When their buds burst open,
you see for yourselves and know that summer is now near;
in the same way, when you see these things happening,
know that the Kingdom of God is near.
Amen, I say to you, this generation will not pass away
until all these things have taken place.
Heaven and earth will pass away,
but my words will not pass away.”

Are we aware that the Kingdom of God, brought forth by Christ Jesus, is upon us?  Do we know that although we live after Jesus ushered in that Kingdom, the Kingdom will be fully realized when the Lord comes again at the end of time?  Do we know the signs that foretell the coming of the Son of Man?  Are we even looking?

Be awake, my sisters and brothers.
