Whoever Does the Will of God Remains Forever

St.-John-the-Apostle1

John’s letter we read today is both encouragement and warning.  He makes a clear distinction between the things of God and the things of the world.  It is an especially relevant consideration for us given the trend of our culture to glorify sinful behavior and its encouragement of unbridled avarice.  How often have we been seduced by sensual lust and a pretentious lifestyle?

I am writing to you, children,
because your sins have been forgiven for his name’s sake.

I am writing to you, fathers,
because you know him who is from the beginning.

I am writing to you, young men,
because you have conquered the Evil One.

I write to you, children,
because you know the Father.

I write to you, fathers,
because you know him who is from the beginning.

I write to you, young men,
because you are strong and the word of God remains in you,
and you have conquered the Evil One.

Do not love the world or the things of the world.
If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.
For all that is in the world,
sensual lust, enticement for the eyes, and a pretentious life,
is not from the Father but is from the world.
Yet the world and its enticement are passing away.
But whoever does the will of God remains forever.

How can we avoid being seduced by the world?  By loving Jesus Christ above all things.  By strengthening one another in prayer.  By being merciful and charitable to each other.  By forgiving freely.  By studying his word.  By receiving the body and blood of Jesus as often as we are able.

In humility we will we see his face and do his will.

  1. Mary Thomas says:

I am guessing that women and girls are not written about because we are to follow the ways of men and children.

  2. Mary Thomas says:

I now I am going to take a lot of flack for that comment.

  3. Lee Surkin says:

Yes, you will get flack, but you know men, we need to have more guidance; but also remember God is speaking to all children!
