Ok, I know that Jesus wasn’t crazy, but according to today’s very short gospel passage from Mark several of his relatives thought that he was out of his mind. Why would that be?
Jesus came with his disciples into the house.
Again the crowd gathered,
making it impossible for them even to eat.
When his relatives heard of this they set out to seize him,
for they said, “He is out of his mind.”
Well, it makes sense, doesn’t it? From the perspective of his relatives, Jesus had gone off the reservation. After all, he got baptized in the Jordan by that crazy Baptist guy, spent more than a month wandering through the desert and selected a bunch of fishermen and ne’er-do-wells as his disciples. I’m sure that his relatives thought that were doing him a favor by trying to put a stop to what they saw as outrageous behavior.
Jesus paid little mind to those (including his own relatives) who tried to keep him from accomplishing his mission. We, too, have to ignore the skeptics who try to dissuade us from our faith. Like Jesus, we have to stay focused on the mission!
