The Baptist

John the Baptist, the cousin of Jesus, set the stage for the Lord’s mission to bring the good news to the people of Israel.  Although John was killed before the events that led Jesus to the cross, it was his courageous preaching that softened the hearts of many who became followers of the Lord.

Thus says the Lord GOD:
Lo, I am sending my messenger
to prepare the way before me;
And suddenly there will come to the temple
the LORD whom you seek,
And the messenger of the covenant whom you desire.
Yes, he is coming, says the LORD of hosts.
But who will endure the day of his coming?
And who can stand when he appears?
For he is like the refiner’s fire,
or like the fuller’s lye.
He will sit refining and purifying silver,
and he will purify the sons of Levi,
Refining them like gold or like silver
that they may offer due sacrifice to the LORD.
Then the sacrifice of Judah and Jerusalem
will please the LORD,
as in the days of old, as in years gone by.

The Baptist is an example of courageous devotion to the truth.  Each of us is called to emulate John in the community we live in.

Saint John the Baptist, pray for us!

One Response to The Baptist

  1. Lee Surkin says:

God has placed a deeper Spirit within us. It is the source of our integrity and our wisdom and our ability to see the truth and to respond to the truth. It is the source of our courage. It is the source of our strength. We can easily forgive a child who is afraid of the dark, the real tragedy of life is when men are afraid of the light.
